  • Intelligence: 2/7

Is it ironic that the most enduring adversary in the fight between mutants and humans are a bunch of giant autonomous robots? The Sentinels weren’t being used TOO much in the early 90’s, and when they were they were being modified a bit (the seminal Uncanny X-Men #281 featured smaller, more vicious Sentinels owned by the Upstarts). Given Jim Lee et al’s affinity for all things tech-y (as well as villains with no more personality than just being psychotically violent) I’m surprised they didn’t fully embrace the Sentinels, maybe even revamping them to take on a more anime-inspired design. It wasn’t until a few years later that the Sentinels got revamped with the Bastion storyline, introducing a human-sized and shaped Sentinel.

The art shows how awkward the old Sentinel designs appear when drawn by someone so modern as Lee… he can’t revel in his love for hulking muscles and exaggerated poses, and the art is an unappealing mess of lack of detail in some areas and haphazard crosshatching in others.

The Energy and Strength-heavy Power Ratings look intimidating enough, but I’m disappointed by the low 2/7 Intelligence Rating, which seems low for ANY sci-fi robot, much less ones whose biographies refer to their ability to “learn from their mistakes and come back stronger than before!

2 is “normal” on this scale, right? I think that’s about right. A robot as intelligent as a normal human is pretty smart, really. We haven’t built one of those in real life yet.

I don’t think we’ve built a 20 foot purple automaton that gets pooped out the vag of an even larger robot either.

The X-Men storyline that always comes to mind for me when I think of the Sentinels is Days of Future Past. One of my favorite all time X-men storylines too.

I’d say the Sentnels should have a 1 for intelligence because they are robots. There are only a handful in the Marvel Universe that are actually sentient (Ultron, Vision, etc…) Even Nimrod was little more than a killing machine.
