  • Intelligence: 6/7

Forge is a Native American techno-genius. Nice setup by Claremont, and yet despite the fact that everyone in the 90’s was packing massive guns even if they didn’t need it, Forge, like Banshee, was woefully underutilized in this period. I honestly can’t remember any early 90’s storyline which was significantly affected by his abilities (it seemed technological resources was something nobody was lacking). In the 80’s, he had nice storylines involving his spiritual journey, and his brief but intense relationship with Storm; neither storylines had much to do with general mutant continuity.

His portrayal in the front of the card is about the most action Forge has ever had up until this point, decked out in techno-weapons; of course, there’s no indication he built any of that stuff, but I guess an image of him putting an Erector set together would be a snoozefest (though it would’ve looked cool and way more appropriate).

His Power Ratings are way too favorable, stretching credibility even for the most ardent Forge fans (I am not, though I do like him). His X-Tra Fact refers to his Native American mystical abilities, but does that really translate to a 5/7 for Mental Powers? A 4/7 for Fighting Ability seems high as well, especially for a guy who didn’t do much fighting. And finally, a 6/7 for Intelligence? Dude’s super smart, but at 6/7, he is literally (spoiler alert) the second smartest guy in this entire card series*, smarter than Beast and Professor X.

*You won’t believe who the number 1 person is. This character also happens to be the only one who has ALL 7/7’s. Can you guess who it is?

I’m guessing that the person with all 7s would be Dark Phoenix.

Why would his intelligence be so high? I never fully understood his powers (I read a description once in the 90s that said something like “figuring out how to make it work is Forge’s mutant power.”) Anyway, I could accept his mental power being as high if they lowered his intelligence, as his power is being smart.

if you read the bio, this IS the card that describes his power that way. In actuality though, he does have the power to invent and engineer technological marvels. While not as well-rounded of a scientist as say, Beast, that does qualify him as something of a genius, but intelligence and mental powers (i.e. psionic powers) are mutually exclusive.
