Subject: Shatterstar
Real Name: Shatterstar

First Appearance: New Mutants #100, April 1991

  • Energy Projection: 2/7
  • Mental Powers: 2/7
  • Strength: 4/7
  • Fighting Ability: 6/7
  • Intelligence: 2/7

Acclaimed comic writer David Server told me once that there was a lot of sword-usage in the 90’s X-Comics. Shatterstar carries not only at least two swords, his swords have two blades each! And despite the X-treme violence on display at around this time, I was always disappointed that we never once saw someone cut up into thin slices like a Christmas ham.

I mean, just imagine the terrible acts committed upon that helpless thug in the foreground of Shatterstar’s card… his armor flaking off like pieces of confetti… his guts must be Slap-chopped at this point. Yikes!

Unfortunately the rest of the art is overly cluttered… so much so that we hardly even see the ridiculous blade arsenal. And if you didn’t see the fingers of the thug on the bottom right, you’d think there was only one thug and Shatterstar was reverse-cowboying him. The side-b portrait meanwhile makes him look like Sin City’s Marv.

Shatterstar’s eventual “true” origin came out after these cards (and after the Image guys had left), so I’ll spare myself having to try to wade into that continuity swamp… instead the cards make Shatterstar out as the 90’s badass update to Longshot (as in he is, literally, from the future of Longshot’s timeline… apparently).

His Power Ratings at least focus on his fantastic killing skills, but almost every other rating seems too high… first of all, Strength at 4 would make sense except that means twice as strong as Wolverine, and four times stronger than Havok. And he doesn’t have any Energy or Mental powers at all, so why are they at 2? You don’t need psychic powers when you got double swords, biatch!

Shatterstar actually stabs juggernaut in the face during a xforce\spiderman crossover and makes him bleed. Other than that u might b right.

Yup, I bring that up in the Juggernaut card. Keep reading :)

Shatterstar actually had a little-used mutant power to shoot powerful Energy Blasts. It was one of many side-powers Liefeld/Nicieza tossed onto the X-Force gang later, upon realizing that ‘looks cool and fights good’ isn’t really a power (same thing happened with Domino).
